Here are my thoughts on why this could fly:
1. CONTENT IS KING. A text book in its current state cannot compete with the iPad. The iPad is highly engaging and textbooks will eventually be left behind. It’s just a matter of who, what, when, and where. The why has already been answered.
2. INFRASTRUCTURE: With iTunes, and the millions of Apps that it contains, they are better positioned than anyone in the market. Though competitors will enter the market, they will not be able to compete unless they have a better software delivery system than Apple. Apple has a huge head start.
3. QUALITY: Obviously, the iPad is the cream of the crop. Since Apple controls the hardware AND software specs and design, the final product is all but flawless. Who else is doing that? I think RIM is the only one that comes to mind.
4. COST: $500 per unit is the retail cost. The educational rate will be much lower. Have you seen the cost of textbooks? At the college level, they can run into the hundreds just for one book. The next year the publisher comes out with a updated version.
5: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: The network already exists, it’s called the App Store. As for the software support, my daughter is 19 months old and can download and install new apps by herself! Not a show stopper IMO.
